I believe the surroundings we live in build the foundations of the people we are and the the people we want to becom. Every human functions from there environment and the artist is especially sensitive to its environment. I'm interested in the city and how it struggles between a place of beauty and chaos.
Will Aslop Wrote a paragraph on the city which caught my eye and sums it up nicely. The bits i love are in (CAPS).
Behind my house the intercity trains roar past, rattling the bolts of the locks in the door frames. Goods trains that bear names such as Maersk, P&O, China Shipping and Hapag-Lloyd creak and clank past, heavy with collective weight of global commerce, squealing high pitch metallic complaints into the orange night air. The imposing bleach white skeletal groins and trusses of a famous football stadium sits just just the other side of the line, squatting at the edge of mile on mile of industrial brown field. Gradually, with the tick of an enormous and irregular clock who's hands shift in eons, the old industry is being converted into sites of cultural activity that include shopping centres, art galleries, museums, theatre and media centres. Hand in glove with this rise up the luxury flats, the dockside apartments, the affordable and unaffordable new urban terrain of signature architectural sprawl. THE SKY LINE IS A SYMPHONY OF CRANES, penthouses and vapour trails, a tone poem of the contemporary city. This is the view that first greets the passengers on the incoming trains, the amber haze of confidence that is, for the time being, neither on stop or go, held growling back by the shadow of a dark stain from the hemorrhaging economy.
I live in the city. I work in another. I visit yet others. I AM REPULSED BY IT, AND INFATUATED BY IT, I WANT TO ESCAPE IT AND I WANT TO EMBRACE IT. I WANT TO DEFINE IT, AND CANNOT. A PART OF ME LOVES TO LOVE IT, A PART OF ME HATES TO HATE IT. I RESIST ITS EMBRACE ITS RESISTANCE. I AFFILIATE AND I DISASSOCIATE. I AM FICKLE, PROUD AND DISLOYAL. I BREAK MY PROMISE TO THE CITY, AND IT BREAKS MY HEART.
